Our method.
The record
Every result here is a public auction sale of a Banksy print, from 19 Nov 2006 to 24 Sep 2026, 2,980 of them in all. Prices are in pounds and are what the buyer paid all in: the hammer, the buyer’s premium and, where the house charges them, VAT on the premium and the Artist’s Resale Right. Sales in other currencies are converted to pounds. If you choose dollars, euros or yen at the top of the page, values are converted from pounds at the European Central Bank rate of 29 Sep 2026, refreshed each month with the results. Lots that failed to sell are left out. Where the same lot appears twice, once through an aggregator and once through its own house, only one is kept.
The value
Each print has a level, and the whole market moves around it month by month. We fit both from every sale at once, so a print that has not sold for a year still moves with the market rather than sitting at an old price. Then each print’s own recent results pull its value towards what it has actually been making, weighted so that last month counts twice as much as a year ago, and held back so a single surprising result cannot swing a quiet print on its own.
The range
No two prints of the same edition sell for the same price, so every value comes with a range: the middle half of where that print’s results have landed around its value. A print with a long, steady record has a tight range, and one with a handful of scattered sales has a wide one.
Condition and the certificate
The condition notes in auction records are loose, and in this record they barely move the price, so we do not price them in. In the Collection, condition places your print within its range: towards the top for a print in excellent condition, towards the bottom for one with damage. The major auction houses only sell Banksy prints with a certificate from Pest Control Office, so a print without one is not valued here at all.
The Banksy Index
The index is the market part of the model on its own: how much the typical Banksy print has moved, month by month, with every print counting the same whatever it costs. We show it as change: how far the market has moved over the period you choose, and from its peak.
Sources
The record is compiled from public auction results, gathered from more than one published source and compared wherever they hold the same lot. From here on, new results come straight from the auction houses’ own published results each month. Some houses publish a price without VAT on the premium or the resale right, so results from those houses since 2020 are put on the same all-in basis as the rest of the record, at the rate that house’s figures differ by wherever the sources overlap.
